In a shocking turn of events, a group of concerned Niger Delta youths has come forward to denounce what they claim is a orchestrated attack on the Tinubu administration. The controversy centers around recent protests at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), which these youths assert were not genuine grassroots movements but carefully staged events.
Tonye Samuel, speaking on behalf of Concerned Niger Delta Youths from Rivers State, expressed deep disappointment in fellow youths who, he claims, allowed themselves to be manipulated. "It's a pity that some youths of our region would let themselves be used like this in the 21st century," Samuel stated.
The group specifically called out Mathew Tonlagha and Government Ekpemupolo, better known as Tompolo, accusing them of prioritizing personal interests over the welfare of the region. Samuel made startling allegations about Tonlagha's influence, claiming that under the Mele Kyari leadership, NNPCL operations were essentially run from a hotel room at the Hilton in the last days of Mele Kyari before he handed over to Mr Bayo.
"Mathew Tonlagha is a very dangerous person," Samuel asserted, suggesting links between Tonlagha and controversial activities during Mele Kyari's tenure at NNPCL. The youth group called for anti-graft agencies to investigate Tonlagha thoroughly.
Questions were raised about the motives behind the recent protests against the current NNPCL leadership under Mr. Bayo. The youth group speculated that the demonstrations might be retaliation for Mr. Bayo's refusal to acquiesce to certain demands or "do their bidding."
The concerned youths also highlighted what they see as hypocrisy, questioning why there were no protests during Mele Kyari's tenure, which they allege was marked by significant corruption and mismanagement of resources. "Why did these youths not protest when Mele Kyari was allegedly stealing billions of dollars and neglecting our refineries under the supervision of Timi Pere Sylva and Heineken Lokpobiri?" Samuel asked.
The group didn't hold back in their criticism of Tompolo either, accusing him of human rights abuses and questioning the silence of these same protestors during that period.
In a direct appeal to President Tinubu, the youth group warned that figures like Tompolo and his associates would not support the administration as they had opposed him in the 2023 elections. They called for "drastic actions" against what they termed as "Tompolo and gang" for alleged human rights abuses and misappropriation of national resources.
This explosive set of allegations and counter-narratives highlights the complex web of politics, oil, and regional dynamics in the Niger Delta. As these claims circulate, they are likely to spark intense debate and potentially lead to further investigations into the management of Nigeria's crucial oil sector.
